The Backstreet

In July 2022 the iconic gay club “The Backstreet” closed after 37 years.
Found in a small street in the London borough of Tower Hamlets, with no sign and only a black entrance door the club has maintained a very discreet presence over the years. Despite this The Backstreet has been at the forefront of the leatherman subculture in Europe and became a second home for a community of men of all ages.
Director Romain Beck is making a documentary to tell the unique story of the club and its community, in partnership with the Museum of London and the Bishopsgate Institute. From the perspective of a DOP, the club was incredibly dark to get an exposure and we had to be incredibly discrete and mindful of the patrons as normally no cameras are allowed in the space. In spite of this, we were able to capture unique footage in a space where cameras are not normally allowed.
